Behind the scenes at Fanpop

Pandia interviews Dave Lu of the new folksonomy site Fanpop. The core concept of Fanpop is social bookmarking, but with an emphasis on community. As it is still in Beta, interesting changes keep happening.

Pandia presented Fanpop in an article last month. We like the site and concluded that it is not essentially a fan site, but rather a place where people with special interests gather in groups to share and rate links, participate in discussions, read news headlines and more.

Link building, Web 2.0 style

Getting listed in social sites or “folksonomies” like digg, Netscape, Reddit and Fanpop, may help generate links and improve your search engine ranking.

Web 2.0 is a buzzword for the increasing importance of social sites, i.e. websites where the readers contribute more to the content of the site than the owners themselves.

There are especially three types of Web 2.0 sites that are of importance for search engine marketers: bookmarking sites like del.icio.us, blog trackers and search engines like Technorati, and article recommendation sites like digg.

Google's experimental search site Searchmash

Google is testing new approaches to Internet searching with alternative search site.

Do you want to know what the Google engineers are up to when they are not working on the Google search engine? Well, some of them are apparently experimenting with a new, experimental, search site called Searchmash.

The site has no Google logo and appears to be a new search engine. It is not, though. It is definitely powered and owned by Google.

A magazine for search engine marketing

A new issue of the Search Engine Marketing Standard is out, larger and better.

In our review of the first issue of the only paper based search engine marketing periodical in the world, we concluded that it was well worth the price. And indeed, the second issue confirms that the magazine is a must read for anyone remotely connected to search engine marketing.

Amazon's A9 search engine redesigned

Amazon’s A9 drops support for bookmarks and diary. Adds new search design.

Amazon has developed a new strategy for its A9 search site.

The company has clearly abandoned the plans of turning A9 into a personal portal for searchers. Functions such as personal search history, diary and bookmarks have been abandoned.
