Ixquick warns searchers about privacy issues

Search Marketing StandardMetasearch engine Ixquick promises to delete users’ privacy data within 48 hours.

Robert E.G. Beens, CEO of the metasearch engine Ixquick.com, has sent us a mail where he draws attention to the recent debate on search engine privacy concerns.

He points to the Financial Times. The newspaper says that “The race to accumulate the most comprehensive database of individual information has become the new battleground for search engines”.

Indeed, for good and for bad, search engines like Google are accumulating more and more data from our search habits, mail databases, bookmarking services, send-me-an-email-alert services, web feed readers and more.

Google recognizes faces

Google Image Search is now able to identify faces in pictures.

By Pandia Guest Writer Lars Iselid, Internetbrus

Google has made a silent launch of a new face search function in Google Image Search .

If you search for a person — let’s say Henrik Larsson — and then add the following text string to the end of the URL: &imgtype=face , Google will only include faces in image search results.

In this case Google will, unfortunately, not only give us pictures of the Swedish soccer player Henrik Larsson.

It would be great if Google could take this function one step further and sort pictures of people with similar names into different clusters. In this way a search for James Dean would sort the results for the actor James Dean and the singer James Dean Bradfield into different lists of search results.

You may exchange the term face in the search string URL with news in order to generate news related pictures only.

These new functions are probably the result of Google buying Neven Vision in the fall of 2006.

Many ways to search your Gmail mailboxes

Gmail’s slogan goes “Search, don’t sort”. This is an obvious choice for a company best known for their search engine. And with virtually unlimited storing space for each Gmail account, chances are you will need some powerful search strategies. Here are a whole list of them.

Search with operators

Looking for a mail from your friend John? Use the Gmail search box and type from:john. Gmail will find all mails from John. If you can’t remember if the mail you are looking for was sent by John or Paul, type from:john OR paul.

The best search engine marketing magazines

We take a look at the best magazines covering the search engine marketing scene.

There are those that argue that printing paper based search engine marketing magazines is meaningless, as anyone interested will find their information online anyway.

And, indeed, they can. However, there is much to be said for sitting down in a sofa with a cup of good coffee and read a more comprehensive discussion on how to get search engine results.

There are now several American magazines that cover the search engine scene. Two of them are focusing on the needs of the search engine marketer in particular.

Daron Babin on online radio, podcasting and search engine marketing

Daron BabinOnline radio expert Daron Babin talks about Webmasterradio.fm, Internet radio, podcasting, podcast search engine marketing and two new search engines for audio and video podcasts.

Daron Babin is, together with his wife Brandy Shapiro-Babin, the core of Webmasterradio.fm, the most influential online radio station for Internet marketing and search engine optimization.

Readers that followed our coverage of the Search Engine Strategies conference in New York, know that we interviewed Daron while being there.

We had, as a matter of fact, planned a regular let’s-write-this-down interview, but we should have known better. I (Per Koch of Pandia) ended up interviewing him live on the radio up in the Webmasterradio.fm stand. That was definitely a first for me!

And yes, you can listen to the interview instead of reading it, as Daron & Co has been kind enough to put up the audio file at the Webamsterradio.fm site.

Selecting themes for radio shows

Per: You are focusing on webmasters and very advanced web users, and Webmasterradio represents the front end of technology. How do you select the themes for the various programs or shows?

Daron: I have people come up to us all the time and say “How do I get a radio show on Webmasterradio?” Quite honestly, we don’t take this lightly. We don’t just put anyone on the air.

We really like to be selective and cherry pick what we would call the cream of the crop out there of the industry’s finest. The finest minds and the most respected, people that have traveled through many, many conferences, giving of their time and expertise.

Since we are the official radio station for most of these prestigious conferences, we have access to these people. We find who would be a good fit based on what’s happening trend wise in the industry. We talk to them. We bring them into the fold, as part of the family.

Motivating show hosts

Per: It must be quite a commitment to be a podcast host. How do you motivate them? A common problem in the podcasting sphere is the lack of regular programming, or hosts that talk more about their private lives than the topic at hand.
