At the recent New York Strategies conference Shari Thurow from Grantastic Designs, Inc. talked about how the search engines identify duplicate content.

The search engines do not like to see duplicate content, she said, because it slows down the retrieval process and degrades the search experience (you do not want to see several search engine result listings delivering the same text).

Search engine Exalead presents several new advanced features

Exalead presents Wikipedia search, blog and forum search and an improved image finder.

The French search engine Exalead has probably the most comprehensive set of search functions of all search engines available. Regular searchers do not concern themselves with advanced search functions, which is probably why they haven’t heard about Exalead. That’s a shame!

Exalead has presented several new features lately:

Restrict to blogs

You may now restrict the list of search result to blogs or forums. In the search engine result page you will find a box called “Refine your search” on the right hand side. This new feature is found under the subcategory “Site Search”, marked as “Beta”.

Google is now the world’s leading brand as well as online property

Google seems to be winning most of the ranking battles of the day.

We all know that Google is the most popular search engine in the world, with more than half of the World’s searches.

According to Comscore Google is now more popular than Microsoft in general online — not only in search.

Google sites got 528 million unique visitors in March, up 13 percent from a year ago and 1 million visitors more than Microsoft’s 527 million visitors. Yahoo had 476.3 million visitors in March.

Autonomy to buy video search engine Blinkx

British Autonomy Corp. Ltd. is to buy the video search engine Blinkx.

Blinkx is already using Autonomy’s technology for indexing video content from YouTube, CNN, BBC and others. Blinkx delivers video search to other portals, including Quintura and Microsoft’s MSN and Live.com.

Needless to say, the interest in efficient video search has increased tremendously after the success of YouTube and other video sharing sites.
